With a clear vocation of innovation and of contribution to world premières, the chamber opera 4Carmen is the newly commissioned opera of the Peralada Festival in a co-production with the Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació-BNC. On this occasion, four groups of creators got together, made up of Marc Angelet and Clara Peya, Jordi Oriol and Carles Pedragosa, Marc Artigau and Lucas Peire, and Helena Tomero and Misha Tahgian, to create and compose a short opera piece each based on a number of formal premises and the common theme of the story of Carmen. An evening devoted to lovers of new creation.
Who is Carmen? What is for us the myth? A femme fatale who obeys the fate dictated by the cards? Or a victim of male violence struggling to escape her misfortune? Is she the quintessential South, hot and passionate, versus a cold and rational in excess north? Or is she the gypsy, outcast and classless, stomping to challenge a society rooted in inequality and injustice? Or is she the cheeky cigarette factory girl who does not believe in ties and is the self-conscious emblem of freedom, a freedom that every day she wins the hard way? There are many and varied Carmens, and that is perhaps why the myth still lives on everyone’s heads.
4Carmen was born by a comission made by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació to four pairs formed by a librettist and a composer. The comission was to create four short pieces around the myth of the gypsy immortalized in the Merimee novel, but especially in Bizet’s opera. The resulting works from the workshop, despite its heterogeneous nature, are presented as a unit in the same evening that also aims to break, or rather approach, the boundaries between poetry and drama, between tonal music and more experimental. It is with this eclectic approach that the creators have been paired, seeking a contrast between different voices and styles.
With 4Carmen Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació wants to repeat the successful experience of his latest project Dido Reloaded / Go, Aeneas, Go!, premiered at the Teatre Lliure and the Neuköllner Oper Berlin and that meant for his young team of creators achieving the Berliner Opernpreis 2014. Thus, 4Carmen is another step in our intent to promote the birth of a new repertoire of lyrical pieces signed by our young artists and the conviction that are this type of actions that ensure the good health of the genre.
