II OPERA XXI PRIZES
The prize for the best initiative in the promotion of lyrical music is for Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació (OBNC), which has just celebrated its 25th anniversary in the world of music theatre.
The jury for the prizes recognised the work in the world premiere, in March 2019, of the opera Je suis narcissiste, with music by Raquel García-Tomás, libretto by Helena Tornero, staging by Marta Pazos, musical direction by Vinicius Kattah, in co-production with the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Teatro Español and the Teatre Lliure. The prize also recognised the work done in the promotion of new creation with the premiere of the chamber opera by the young composer, Joan Magrané, Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina, which was premiered at the Festival de Peralada in a co-production with the Gran Teatre del Liceu, a project signed off by Francesc Prat in its musical aspect and by Marc Rosich in the stage direction, and with Jaume Plensa in charge of stage design.
The central objective of OBNC is to promote new opera creation, boost the emergence of new composers, librettists, dramaturgs, as well as musicians and singers, all of whom have shared interest in working in contemporary creation. It also presents small format works in Catalonia by international authors.
In February 2005, under the banner of Opera XXI, the Asociación de Teatros, Festivales y Temporadas Estables de Ópera en España was formed. Since its creation, the organisation has shown a clear vocation to create an open and participative cultural model for opera, adapted to the needs and audiences of the 21st century.
